Die UNESCO erklärte die Galapagos Inseln zum Weltnaturerbe, es ist ein einzigartiges Archipel und eines der Weltwunder.
Die Artenvielfalt entwickelte sich auf vulkanischem Boden, der aus den Tiefen des Pazifiks emporstieg. Hier haben die Kormorane das Fliegen verlernt, und ihre Flügel haben sich zurückgebildet. Um an die Nahrung heranzukommen, haben die Finken von Insel zu Insel unterschiedliche Schnäbel entwickelt. Die Echsen haben schwimmen und tauchen gelernt. Die Schildkröten sind Riesen geworden, die Haie zahm.
Die Inseln liegen 965 Kilometer westlich vor der Küste Kontinentalecuadors. Zu bewundern sind beeindruckende geologische Formationen, alte und neue Lavaströme, verschiedene Arten von Kegeln und Tunneln, die durch unterirdische Lavaströme gebildet wurden. Der Sand an den Stränden ist weiß, rot oder schwarz, und in den außergewöhnlichen Landschaften haben sich ganz unterschiedliche Lebensformen entwickelt. Hier kann man nachempfinden, mit welchem Interesse Charles Darwin den Ursprung der Arten erforscht und seine Evolutionstheorie entwickelt hat.
