CUENCA

Another UNESCO’s World Heritage Site is the historic city of Cuenca.  Its historical constructions date back centuries ago and have remained intact for all this time because it has not been affected by natural disasters.

Its city center is filled with colonial squares and cathedrals, glorious churches and the flower market that decorate the city.  Monasteries and museums that contain unique art pieces.  Getting to the “Turi” viewpoint, in the afternoon, shows the great city which is divided by four rivers and its skyline.

In the surroundings of Cuenca, the Ingapirca Ruins are found.  They are the most prominent Incan ruins that exist in Ecuador and were built by the Cañaris a local civilization that lived before the Incas.  This Temple was meant to worship the sun and the moon and was also used as a burial site.

Another interesting place to visit is the lagoons’ area which are in the “Cajas National Park,” a natural protected area, part of the Andean highlands.  The moorlands have a humid and misty climate and are home to endemic birds, plants, and other fauna.  There are about 178 lagoons in the park which drain down in the rivers that cross Cuenca city.
