OTAVALO & THE CHASKI ROUTE

Going north from Quito, there is the Imbabura Province which is also known as the “land of lakes.”  Still going in through the highland region, the scenery is comprised with volcanic landscapes and green pastures where small agricultural towns have settled.  There is the chance to see the snow-capped volcano Cayambe as well as the Imbabura Mountain.

In a 2-hour drive, there is Otavalo, the biggest indigenous market in Latin America.  The market activity starts early morning to greet visitors from all over the world.  Artisants have their stands to sell their hand-made goods such as jewelry, clothing, spices, leather goods, colorful traditional tapestry, hammocks, etc.  The most famous are the “ponchos” that are thick woven pieces used by local people to contrast the cold weather of the Ecuadorian highlands.

There are also souvenirs created by the community’s members and traditional activities visitors can take part on and learn more about this ancestral culture.
