GALAPAGOS FLAMINGO

These wading animals reside in the Galapagos in salt-water lagoons that have been forming amid the lava fields.  As their Caribbean cousins, they have long reddish legs, and curved neck.  They can measure between 120 -140 cm in length and they have pink feathers and legs.  The pink color is a result of their diet: shrimps and small crustaceans that contain carotenoids.

They are slow-passive feeders which helps them to use energy efficiency, as well as their beaks, are specially shaped to filter mud from food.  Their nests are usually built on mud and stones and can be high-level constructions for protection.

Flamingos can be seen in itinerary A and D of the Galapagos Legend and the Corals.
