GALAPAGOS PENGUIN

This penguin is another unique species that can only be found in the Galapagos islands.  It is the only penguin that lives in the tropics and has adapted to live in warm weather by the Equator Line.  They are the smallest of the warm-weather penguins, and they can have an average height of 45 cm (18 inches).  Top of their heads and back, down to their tail are black as well as their flippers.  While in their belly, they have a back semi-circular shape and the rest is white.

This fantastic creature lives off the waters of the islands; they feed mainly on sardines and mullet, brought by cold ocean currents.  They are very agile hunters; they can swim to speeds up to 35 km per hour.  They are mainly found on Fernandina Island, where they prepare their nests, mating for life, only if there is plenty of food available.

Galapagos penguins are friendly animals, that be seen on land and can also be swimming companions in water activities.  They can be found in itineraries B and C of the Galapagos Legend and the Coral yachts.
