MARINE IGUANA

The only marine iguana on the world that lives in the Galapagos.  They can be found all over the islands, and they will be spotted by the shores basking under the sun to get warm and dry.  The black/gray skin color is what makes them so hard to tell them apart from the rocky volcanic shores.  However, when they are in their mating period, males get patches of red and greenish colors to attract a mate.  They have a crest going from their heads all the way to their back as well as sharp claws that help them to climb and to cling to rocks when ocean currents are strong.

They have ecologically adapted to the resources that the islands offer, by feeding off red algae and seaweed and by dedicating a part of their day to swim around the rocks in search of food.  Their average length is between 2 -3 feet long with a round head and a long tail that helps them direct their moves while swimming.

Marine iguanas are seen in all the Galapagos Legend and Corals itineraries.
