BLUE-FOOTED BOOBY

This marine bird is recognized for its bright blue feet that help males in courtship periods.  The blue color is also a sign of how healthy the bird is; the bluer, the better.  Its name “booby” comes from the Spanish word “bobo” which means silly or clumsy, due to the exaggerated way of raising their feet to romance their females in the mating ritual.  They mate for life, and they take turns to incubate two to three eggs.

Its body is mainly white, with slight brown color on their head and dark brown wings.  Its diet consists of fish which it gets by plunging to the ocean and swimming with the help of its webbed feet.  There is almost no way to differentiate a male from a female; the only way is to see their eyes up close, to see females’ larger pupils.

Blue-footed boobies can be found all around the Galapagos in any of our itineraries on the Galapagos Legend and the Coral yachts.
