DARWIN FINCHES

The famous Darwin finches are 14 species named after the explorer and biologist Charles Darwin.  All of them reside on the islands.  They are small birds with gray, black or brown feathers that tend to welcome visitors pushed by their curiosity.  The only way to differentiate them is by the size of their beaks which have evolved to adapt to their feeding needs on the islands where some are endemic.

Some finches have beaks to eat insects; other have strictly vegetarian diets.  Some have a beneficial mutualistic relation with local animals (tortoises, land, and marine iguanas) helping them to get rid of parasites on the skin.

Darwin finches can be seen on all itineraries of the Galapagos Legend and the Coral yachts.
